You can remedy the winter blues with these suggestions: Open up to Welcome Day Light : Leave your blinds or curtains open at night so that day light (and sunlight perhaps) flows into your bedroom in the morning. Get some exercise : Exercise always lightens the mood. You can always do indoor exercises if walking outdoors is requiring too much effort for you. Join a gym or check out classes at the Community Centres in your Suburb. There will always be group classes that you will find interesting. You can start hopping unto those threadmills or join Zumba classes. I would recommend you check out classes at CityDance (http://www.citydance.co.nz/), DancePro (http://www.dancepro.co.nz/ or DX Dance (http://www.dxdance.co.nz/) so you get a variety of choices. The Glen Innes Aquatic centre have heated pools and they hold regular pool aerobic classes at very affordable fees.Join a Book Club : Go to the library and get books of different genre. Read a book about summer love and this would certainly heat up your imagination. And yes, join a book club and meet new friends. This is a good incentive to go to the library regularly. Plan Something : Start a blog. Sew Curtains. Plan a Party. Start a scrapbook project. Plan a Vacation. Write a book. Whatever. Just start a project. Being busy with something will improve your mood significantly. Promise. Learn a new skill or language : My love for football started in 2006 when I got interested in Jürgen Klinsmann's portfolio. 2006 war das Jahr lernte ich Fußball und Deutsch. Then in 2007, after watching my first french movie. La Vie en Rose, Je voulais apprendre le français aussi. But 2010 will be quite different. I will learn the language of the camera. Shutterspeed, ISO, and aperture. Teach something to someone : Share your expertise. Prepare a lesson plan and share this with your neighbours and friends. Photoshop tutorials. Cooking for Winter. Baking Vegetarian. Budgetting. Accounting for Dummies. Anything that keeps you busy is good to cure Winter blahs. Write Letters : Winter is the best time to pick up your pen and stationary. Write letters to your friends and I am sure they will be happy to pick up something from their mailbox from you. Letters are personal and is the best way to show you care. You can post Christmas messages as it will take some time for your letters to get to the Philippines. Have fun writing one letter a night and I can assure you that winter will pass by before you know it. This keeps your mind off from feeling the cold. Change your routine : Visit the museum on a weekday instead of a weekend. Check out antique shops instead of visiting OP shops. Doing something different is one way to enjoy winter. Importantly, Keep yourself Warm : Dress right. Wear socks, use gloves for your hands. Boots for your feet. Scarves for your neck, beanies for your head, and wear the right merino, wools, knits, thermals, fleece, and other layering clothing to keep you warm. Winter clothes do not need to be expensive. Visit the Salvation Army shops and you will be amazed at the treasure you can find without costing you an arm. The good news is – winter does not last forever. Take charge of your mood and kiss that Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) goodbye. [Photo credit: Wet Winter painting by Debra Hurd] |

It is my third winter in Auckland and I swear to myself that I won't let the seemingly, never-ending cloudy days let me down. I have therefore compiled some sort of list that I go over each day to remind me that “Attitude means Everything”. I will not allow the dreariness of the cold dampen my spirits, despite the challenge of waking up every day
